Ahuvia Goren | “The Missing Link? Early Modern Jewish Scholasticism,”

Ahuvia Goren,
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
with a response from David Sclar, Princeton University

The prevailing perspective in the study of Jewish philosophy argues that Aristotelian philosophy and scholastic writing underwent a gradual decline during the 15th century. This presentation explores the phenomenon of early modern Jewish scholarship produced between 1580 and 1710 that engaged with Aristotelian themes in a scholastic manner. By focusing on these works, I draw attention to this frequently overlooked corpus and contend that, in addition to nuancing perspectives on the prevalent view, it provides further insights into early modern intellectual trends and Jewish involvement in them.

Co-sponsored by the Early Modern Workshop in the Department of History, the Early Sciences Working Group, and the Center for Jewish Studies.
