Bielefeld University, Germany

Abrham Yohannes is a sociologist and received his doctoral degree in 2023 from Bielefeld University, Germany. His research interests include: theories of nation and nationalism, concepts of ethnicity, identity formation, migration, minority groups, and diaspora, particularly in communities from sub-Saharan regions. In his dissertation, National Identities Versus Cultural Identities: Beta Israel Community (Ethiopian Jews), focuses on national and cultural identities of individual and collectivistic attitudes, and examines ways that this community understands, interprets, and deciphers nationalities, ethnicities, and other group identities in everyday activities. He examines the relationships between circumstances in the host society, such as the internal structure of immigrants, and sociodemographic factors that affect the integration process and identity constructions. While working on his doctoral project, he published a chapter in the book Global Nationalism Ideas, Movements, and Dynamics in the Twenty-First Century. Minority Groups and Nationalism: A Sociological Perspective on How Ethiopian Jews Construct and Configure Identity. During his stay as a Starr Fellow, he will work on his first book and two articles with Major Reference Work Book Series on Mapping Global Inequality published by Springer Nature, United States.
